For this shift series, I’m revisiting ideas about manipulating grids and surfaces, particularly via drawing. I’m interested in the ways a simple Cartesian grid can be warped to create movement and dimensionality, and how repeated segments can build up a form.

In this drawing, a 4” x 10.5” gridded rectangle is shifting vertically, undulating and then gradually descending. It’s capped by a stable grid on either end, with heavy movement in the middle. Like most work I make, I think the drawing can work in all orientations. When displayed as in the image or flipped upside down, the movement trends downward. When turned vertically, the form moves slightly to the right, creating a leaning stack. In my studio, I often find myself flipping drawings and paintings around depending upon what feels right in that moment.
