For this shift series, I’m revisiting ideas about manipulating grids and surfaces, particularly via drawing. I’m interested in the ways a simple Cartesian grid can be warped to create movement and dimensionality, and how repeated segments can build up a form.

In this drawing, a 2.125” x 2.125” gridded square is set on its diagonal and shifted and stretched. Like most work I make, I think the drawing can work in all orientations. When displayed as in the image or flipped upside down, the movement is lateral, with the lines trending to the right or left. When turned vertically, the segments drip, generally following gravity or fight against it. In my studio, I often find myself flipping drawings and paintings around depending upon what feels right in that moment.
